Nepenthes Main Page

Nepenthes are form of pitcher plant that evolved in the Asia pacific region with species found from the top of Australia to Thailand. Nepenthes are a tropical genera but some members come from arid exposed areas and can tolerate cold climates.

Nepenthes as mostly creepers, adapted to climbing trees or shrubs. A large green leaf is developed and after maturity the leaf develops a pitcher at its termination. The pitcher can vary in size from 4cm to over 30cm. Some are so large that they can hold almost a litre of fluids. Most traps are suspended in the air so only flying insects or insects that have walked along the leaf can be caught, some varieties have their pitchers touching the ground so that crawling insects can walk up the traps to be captured.

Nepenthes are highly ornamental, the leaves may be a dull green and look similar on all species but the trap is in each and every species is unique and in many cases quite spectacular with incredible shapes and designs. Nepenthes appear exotic and delicate but they are not. They are easily reproduced from cuttings or seed and are quite rapid growers. In warmer climates they can be grown as garden plants, in cooler climate they do require protection and with some species heating over the winter months. Many growers can successfully grow the plants and have lovely green leaves but no pitchers. The leaf is easily grown but to make the leaf produce the pitcher at the end of itself does require slightly better conditions, increased humidity and more protection may be required.

A large Nepenthes grown to perfection is a sight to behold, they are worth while trying but be sure to check hat the plant you are buying is suites for the location that you have chosen. Nepenthes come from a range of environments and growing conditions and some are very hardy and other quite sensitive.
