Cerussite, chemically lead carbonate (PbCO3) derives its name from the latin cerussa, meaning white and was named in 1845.

Although it has been found since Roman times near the surface of some deposits, the finest specimens were found relativly recently at Tsumeb, Namibia.   This large, museum specimen (Illustrated below) was recently acquired in a buying trip to Africa by one of our world - class mineral buyers.
