Calcite, chemically calcium carbonate, is one of the most common
mineral species. Limestone is the most common form of calcium carbonate and it is
within limestone caves that calcite crystals often form. Calcium carbonate is also
responsible for the creation of stalactites and stalagmites. Calcite may also form
into impressive crystals like the specimens presented in the following pages.
Calcite is one of the most exciting mineral species to collect with some
collectors only collect calcite. This is hardly surprising when one considers
that calcite, (a) crystallizes into over 1200 different crystal forms, (b) it is commonly
associated with other minerals, (c) calcite specimens may also be different colours due to
the presence of trace elements and or inclusions.
| Indian
calcite specimens crystallize in what is known as a "trap-rock" suite. In
this, the calcite is associated with a group of hydrated aluminum silicates (known as
zeolites) and has been deposited in basalt cavities by steaming aqueous solutions. |

Specimens
from this remote locality are reasonably rare. At Nanisivik, specimens are found in
the permafrost - filled cavities which are thawed out at the surface after they are
collected. |
