Gold was first discovered in Australia during the early 1850's and this sparked gold rushes in Victoria and New South Wales that attracted miners from across the world to these newly discovered goldfields.   Many fortunes were made over the coming decades and still today gold mining represents a major industry in Australia and accounts for a significant part of Australia's export earnings.  Gold mining in Australia therefore represents a significant part of our cultural heritage.  Some of the worlds largest nuggets of gold have been found in Australia.

This page contains only Australian Gold see main Gold page for world wide specimens.
