Once again the Melbourne Orchid Spectacular will be held at Gardenworld, Australia's largest nursery complex.

As well as the incredible range of Cymbidiums, Cattleyas and other well known genera of orchids, there will be an extensive displays of the more unusual and rare varieties such as the "Upside Down Orchid" (Stanhopeas) and many of our Victorian ground orchids.

One variety to be featured is the Masdevallia orchid, a dwarf species from the cloud forests of Central America. Masdevallias suit Melbourne's cool moist climate and can also grow well in indoor conditions. Trends within the trade have seen the Masdevallia become the most popular orchid of recent times. This is primarily due to its compact habit, incredible flower colours and patterns and its multitude of easily produced blooms. It is not uncommon for a 5cm pot to carry 10 or more large flowers for months. Masdevallias will one day be a commonly collected orchid by novice gardeners. All that is required is a better understanding of the plants habits by the public and for commercial propagators to make the plant more readily available. Unfortunately, orchids are often misunderstood by gardeners and hence many people are too hesitant to try them out.
