Australian Native Orchids

--- - These photos represent a small range of the varieties being bred from our native Dendrobiums

Australia hosts a large range of Native Orchids from Terrestrials to Epiphytes. Many of our terrestrial orchids are quite startling and unique, unfortunately most are very difficult to grow hence most are never seen in collections. The most noted genera in Australia are the Dendrobiums and the Sarcochilis, both of which have been well hybridized over the years. The Cooktown Orchid (Den biggibum) is a parent responsible for creating most of the noble Dendrobiums seen throughout the tropical countries. Of recent interest has been the newer breeding lines created by our southern cooler growing species using D kingianum, D speciousum and D tetragonum. These groups offer hardy Dendrobiums for cooler climate with a huge selection of different flowers. New breedings crossing these species back to the tropical D biggibum now offer another direction in breeding that is showing good potential for future generations.

Another group which is showing good commercial promise is the breeding of Sarcochilus to improve flower size and colours. This will be a genus to watch in future years.

Happy Growing
