Sulfur

Sulfur is an element and not a complex group of elements as most other minerals. It crystallizes at volcanic vents into bright yellow crystal groups. The classic locality for quality specimens of sulfur is Agrigento, Sicily. This locality has been famous for centuries due to the large well formed crystals of sulfur found there. All of the Sicilian mines as now closed and although specimen production still occurs occasionally, it is unlikely that any major lot will ever be recovered. However, other localities continue to produce fine specimens of crystalline sulfur. Baja California, Mexico produced some of the specimens early this decade. Rotorua, New Zealand is an even newer and more obscure sulfur locality. #
