Opals Main Page    Belemnites    Shells    "Pineapples"

Opalized "pineapples" have formed as  a result of precious opal replacing glauberite (a sulfate mineral).  Such specimens are known as pseudomorphs because although the specimens consist of opal, they still exhibit the external crystal form (morphology) of glauberite.

Opal has been known to replace a variety of different specimens and shells are possibly the most common of the pseudomorphs.  The prices of these opals is governed by the  rarity of the replacement and also by the quality of the opal with similar size specimens varying by huge amounts.  A bolder opal replacement may be a few dollars whereas a high quality black opal replacement could reach 6 figures.

G202 Opal Pineapple

This is a complete specimen showing all the features of a pineapple. Opal is a blue green opal with only a minor play of colours and is mostly opaque. A good low cost specimen of a very rare form of opal.
