Fish fossils have been found in most countries of the world. These fossils give us a very good window into life in the past. The fish are preserved in the mud on the bottom of the lake or pond as the water dissappears. Every few years new layers are created thereby creating layers of build up over the millions of years that give us fascinating windows to different periods of time. Often most of the fish species alive at the time were imbedded in a single layer with many other creatures and plants. Often fish fossils still have skeletons in their stomachs of undigested fish or other creatures. In most cases fish fossils are completely intact with all bones in place and therefore make very presentable specimens that are often used as decorator pieces.
