Sarracenia hybrid

Trumpet Pitcher Plants

Found in the United States the Sarracenias inhabit wetlands and low-lying areas with high moisture level in the soil.  They are very efficient insect collectors capturing a wide range of insects from ants to wasps.  The traps are passive collectors using a sweet nectar in the mouth to draw insects to the trap. Once an insect enters the tube or falls in it is very difficult to get out due to slippery surfaces and downward pointing hairs.  The leaves are very efficient and can in a matter of days be full of insects.

Sarracenias live in full sunlight and are capable of tolerating a huge range of conditions from very high temperature and scalding sun, to extreme cold with some habitat areas under snow and severe frost over the winter months. Sarracenias are a pleasure to grow and are extremely rewarding, they are very ornamental and specimen plants can be quite spectacular.
